Loch Trool, Galloway Forest Park – Wild Camp #051

Well, this one took a long time to get posted.

Back in May we took ourselves off to Scotland to visit a friend in Largs and have a couple of wild camps on the way back to break up the journey home.

We had a really nice time in Largs (apart from getting soaking wet during a sudden and torrential downpour) and after a couple of days of exploring the seafront and just generally chilling out we headed off to Loch Trool.

As we arrived at Loch Trool the heavens opened (again) though it wasn't long before the sun came out and we were able to get going.

The opportunities for a pitch site were quite limited due to the topography around the loch but we found a suitable spot after about an hour of walking and set up just as the midges came out to play. No chance for exploring after that so we spent the rest of the evening snoozing.

The sun was shining the following day as we packed up so we explored the lochside a little before heading back to the car. Our next stop was to be a quiet spot in the middle of Galloway Forest Park. As we approached the only link road which would take us towards our destination we came across a sign:

ROAD CLOSED

Sooo, that put paid to that and we had to come up with a Plan B.

But first we spent three hours aimlessly driving around trying to spot an alternative from the car before giving up and booking into the Silvercraigs Caravan Park - a small campsite overlooking Kirkcudbright.

After an uneventful evening and a very peaceful night we left the campsite to explore the area for a few hours before setting off to meet up with my human grand-parents at a caravan site near Dalbeattie. Along the way we called at Dalbeattie Town Wood and went for a walk to Plantain Loch.
