Waaaaaaay back in July of this year my human and I decided to tackle Great Shunner Fell, another mountain on the Dales 30 list, but he's only just got around to editing the video! Hmmm.
Like a few other Dales 30 hikes the route we chose to the summit wasn't the longest or most interesting especially as most of the height gain was achieved in the car but it was still good to be out in the "wild" again. What's not to like about being out in the fresh air and open countryside?
The hike itself was pretty uneventful however when we got to the summit there was a crowd (well, five people) already there. So that my human didn't have to listen to them chattering away about the best hiking socks, what they carried in their backpacks, what they had for lunch, what route they were taking, where they were from etc. we immediately went for a wander to look for a pitch site!
Anyway, after about 40 minutes they had all gone and so we set about pitching the tent before going for another wander to check out the views and examine the trig point and shelter. It was quite breezy and so we had to pitch the tent a little lower than we would have liked in order to avoid the worst of the wind.
The night passed by without rain or drama and we both slept really well. The following morning we retraced our steps back to the car.
The highlight of this outing was the pair of Short-eared owls that we encountered on the way back. One of them flew so close to us that we could make out its distinctive markings. Very exciting!
